Why the Denver Broncos Defense Will Help Them Repeat as Super Bowl Champions

Jonathan Dyer-USA TODAY Sports

Defending championships are not easy. The Denver Broncos will try to be the first team in a decade to defend their titles. The last team to do that was the New England Patriots back in 2004 and 2005.

Completing this task of defending their titles will be similar to what John Elway and Terrell Davis did in the late 90s. Last season, the Broncos won the Super Bowl because of their defense. Von Miller was the heart and soul of the Broncos Championship season/

Despite having Peyton Manning as their QB, the offense wasn't great. While players like C.J. Anderson, Demaryius Thomas, and Emmanuel Sanders gave them big plays, it was about the defense. This season, the offense is more consistent. Of course, repeating will be tough, but to no surprise, the Broncos are now a top-5 favorite to hoist the Lombardi Trophy in February. I'll explain in this blog.

Defense, defense, defense! I can compare the Broncos defense to some of the great championship defenses in the NFL such as the 1985 Chicago Bears or the 2000 Baltimore Ravens, but Denver's defense rivals those two. After losing Danny Trevathan and Malik Jackson to free agency, there was an expected setback, but that has been proven wrong. Denver is ranked top-5 in defense. To no surprise, Von Miller is an early favorite to win Defensive Player of the Year.

It's not just Von Miller that's doing all the hefty work; it's the cornerback game as well. With a better upgrade on offense, it helps the Broncos to play at an elite level. This season, they have made Cam Newton, Andrew Luck, Andy Dalton, and Jameis Winston look like second tier QB's. Under the philosophy of Wade Phillips, there's a reason to believe that the Broncos will continue its dominance for the rest of this season and in the postseason.
